Motor Vehicle Registration
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle can assist you with the purchase Virginia plates, update your drivers license and purchase new vehicle registration. The Emporia Customer Service Center is located 103 Commonwealth Blvd, Emporia, VA 23847-1225. Bring your current Virginia vehicle registration to the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office located in the Municipal Building at 201 South Main Street to register your vehicle.
Assessment of Personal Property
Per City Code Section 70.53, the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue will make assessments on any motor vehicle, trailer, boats and motors as of January 1st of each year. The tax bills are mailed to the taxpayer in June and are due on July 1st of each year. In addition, the City of Emporia prorates motor vehicles, which simply means that you pay for what you own for the period of time you own it. Motor vehicles specially equipped to provide transportation for handicapped individuals licensed with handicapped plates are exempted from personal property taxes. Documentation identifying the vehicle and the type of special equipment that has been installed must accompany the application.
