Fire Services

The Greensville Volunteer Fire Department serves both Greensville County and the City of Emporia. The volunteer members of the department are highly trained, and stay current on the latest developments in fire fighting and rescue services.

Fireworks
The City of Emporia prohibits the manufacture, possession or display of fireworks for sale. The city also prohibits the use or discharge of fireworks except that pyrotechnic displays may be authorized by resolution of the council when under the control of qualified individuals, and the time, place and manner of such display is approved by the fire marshal.

Open Burning
Except as otherwise provided below, no person shall ignite or maintain, or cause or permit to be ignited or maintained, any open fire on any street, alley or other public property or on private property outside of a building in the city. A violation of this section shall constitute a class 3 misdemeanor.

Open burning shall be permitted in the following circumstances:

1. Open fires may be used for cooking food, provided no fire or smoke hazard or other nuisance is created
2. Open fires may be set for recreational purposes or for ceremonial occasions, provided no fire or smoke hazard or other nuisance is created, the fire is not left unattended, and it is totally extinguished after use
3. Open fires may be set in the performance of official duties by the fire chief or his designee when necessary for any of the following purposes:

  • For the abatement of a fire hazard which cannot be abated by other means;
  • For training in firefighting or research in control of fires under supervision of the fire chief or his designee; or
  • In cases where the fire chief determines open burning is in the public interest and therefore is allowed, a permit shall first be issued by the fire chief and fire official prior to commencing burning.
